Your flatmate has asked "did you hear that?" about every noise in the building since Tuesday. It's Friday now. She asks once more, and you feel your patience leave the room. The colleague who replies-all to the whole company with "thanks!" has done it again. The thread is 40 messages long. You hover over his name and breathe slowly through your nose. Your friend has played the same song at every party since March. He is reaching for the speaker. You have one calm, level sentence prepared, and he knows what it is. The group chat banned one particular joke after it was run into the ground. Someone has just typed the first three words of it. Seven people stop what they're doing and wait. **Why it caught on:** the picture is Jules Winnfield, the hitman in a dark suit pointing a gun across a flat in Quentin Tarantino's *Pulp Fiction* (1994), mid-interrogation of a man who keeps giving the wrong answer. People captioned it with a warning not to do some small irritating thing one more time, and it spread because everyone has a pet hate they'd like to deliver in that tone, and the threat is always out of all proportion to the offence.
